This black wire was coming from the inverter and I checked with the inverter turned on and it had 120 volts and with the inverter off it had zero. The breaker had never tripped. So... the question is... why did it melt and why did the breaker not trip? I suppose a loose connection between the breaker from bouncing down the road for 25 years? I can't get the breaker out to check on how well it snapped in, because of the plastic melted around it. My first thought is to just replace the breaker box and hook everything back up, but would like some insight into what your thoughts are on what could have been the original cause???

Things melted because they got hot. They got hot because of resistance, likely due to a loose or corroded connection. Replace the breaker and anything melted, and if the black wire from the inverter is long enough, trim back a couple of inches then strip/reterminate.

Thanks everyone. Replaced the box and breaker and have power. Had to read up on the new inverter and flip a dip switch to get it to charge the batteries, but seems to be working again. So... I learned something... all the plugs run on one 20 amp circuit so I'm going to be more mindful of what gets plugged in. Thanks again.

Appreciate the "happy ending" reply, Jim. So often a poster simply disappears and we don't know if our advice was good or way off base.

Glad to hear things are working again and that you've increased your knowledge base about your coach. I hope you have many safe and trouble free miles ahead of you.
