1998 Fleetwood Bounder 36s Chevy worth buying?

I am looking for a motorhome to primarily use as a weekend home for a church I pastor that is away from my home. I have 4 kids, 13yr down to 2yr, and we are on a very limited budget. I have found a 1998 Bounder 36S Chevy chassis listed for $8900. It needs two batteries, alternator (giving 12v instead of 13 according to the seller), and the auto brake doesn't work so the hydraulics don't work.

I've read the major issues with that brake, and I am wondering if it is still a good buy at that price and pay to have that brake issue fixed? It doesn't have any soft spots (he says, I was going to look at it tomorrow but not if you guys say no) and the skylight in the bathroom leaked a little, but no longer does. It seems clean for the year based on photos, but my final decision was going to come when I went to look. He also recommended resealing the roof.

We are having to stay under 12-15k. I have good credit, and I can go up to 25-30k, however that would stretch our payments much longer and I was really needing to get something I could pay off within a couple of years. Again, the main use would be leaving it at the church as a trailer, with only moving it sometimes to empty and get the thing moving around some. I would like to use it for trips a few times a year as well.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

I'm not a mechanic so can't advise you on that! Hope it works out good for you!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

If your MH is similar to my 96 the Automatic Park Brake can be disconnected and the floor operated brake will do the same function till you get it fixed.
Do check the roof carefully for any sponginess. When the owner tells you the roof need some attention they usually mean, as in right now, do not leave it for another day.
Check the walls for exterior separation. Check the appliances for operation.

My observations.

Good luck, and

Terry

Also the hydraulics unless they are different from mine have nothing to do with the APB. I know there was a change up but not sure when it happened.

You might be better served with a truck and 5th Wheel. Less potential mechanical problems and probably a lot newer.
