This is positive news!

Did you happen to take a photo or two of the "distribution box?" I ask because what you describe is unfamiliar, and I've spent hours crawling through Ford's wiring. It would help me deliver better advice (clearly needed, after my focus on the chassis battery condition).

Sure - Here you go. This is located on the frame by the engine and passenger wheel. Covered wires go into the box - one of those is a red wire that goes back to the starter.

Thank you for the pictures.

Below is a similar picture from a 2016 thread. I believe the football-shaped object in both is the engine vacuum reservoir. It was in the same location on my 2008 F-53-based coach.
