24 valve engine, after 1998.5 Cummins changed the 5.9 engine from 12 valves to 24 valves and also made it computer controlled instead of mechanical.

If the engine used to run and now doesn't, I'd suspect an electrical issue, like a fuel cutoff solenoid rather than a failed lift pump. The lift pump is on the side of the engine block, right above the starter I believe.

I have heard of the fuel system getting a small air leak, and the fuel runs back to the tank. Have you tried cracking open the injectors to see if there is fuel up there. Im no mechanic, but I have had a few problems with my fuel pumps. Currently needing a new injector pump. My lift pump went first I believe, because it wouldnt pump fuel up to the filter when I changed it. My friend is a diesel mechanic, so I just do what he tells me. lol

It could be your injector pump has failed. You will a specialized code reader to determine the condition of the pump. It use to be, it was about $2.500 for a new pump, install, and computer reflash.

Like mentioned before, the lift pump on the 24V is mounted to the block (same side injection pump [VP-44] is). To be sure it really is a failed lift pump, have someone turn the key to ON (not start) and listen for it to run. It should run for about 5 seconds to pressurize the line to the injection pump. To get it to run longer, simply "bump" the engine (don't let it start) and it will run for about 20 seconds.

Do you get puffs of white smoke while cranking? Does it even try to run while starting? The VP-44 will draw fuel through a bad lift pump, but not for long.

True, and your power will be wayyy down. The pumps can go bad in a number of ways, lots of black smoke, low power, high fuel usage, and just shuts off, no start, but cranks over great.

Thanks to all, figured it out. The starter is going bad and not cranking fast enough, came to find out from a diesel mechanic that it's a common problem with alot of diesels. It starts off cranking like your batteries are weak but then it starts to speed up and once it gets to where it sounds like it should I'll be - It fires and runs!! Never had any smoke come out of this engine and it runs good down the road. I couldn't hear the lift pump from up on top in the bed room with the access cover off but once I got underneath I could hear it run. Problem solved cranks like crazy now and fires.

You will be glad it the starter, and not the injection pump. Cheers.
