I met a fellow last year pulling a 32' stacker trailer with a 45' coach and he was registered in CA. He claimed he never been stopped or questioned about the length.

I don't doubt there are length laws that are broken everyday. However what do you think would happen if he were involved in a personal injury accident, his fault or not, and a sharp investigator for some ambulance chaser attorney decided to measure his rig?

IMO a lot of the laws were developed in implemented in years past and do not account for newer more powerful units. The fact that the rules vary so much from jurisdiction to jurisdiction shows that the authorities cannot agree on what is "right".

Inter jurisdiction trade is widely affected by the inconsistencies. It is time for the polititians to put aside their differences to modernize and standardize the rules as much as possible. I notice that highway painting standards are uniform in North America, why not length?

In Cali you can tow a vehicle or trailer under 10000 lbs with a class B non-com

In Michigan TRAILERS over 3,000 are required to have brakes. NO such restrictions for vehicles.

I studied the ca vehicle code very closely. I found the data on line at ca DMV.gov. I looked before I bought my discovery as it measures 39'10". My coach is a 38' model and still just shy the 40' limit. I have a commercial drivers handbook that also lists the length requirement. Also a friend got cited for his coach and a c licence. He banked on his being a 39' model as per Newmar. His coach measured 40'0"

CA is it's own beast when it comes to enforcement. They are the only ones I've heard that actually check. I'm assuming your friend is lic in CA and anyone outside the state would be legal as long as they where not using one of the limited roads.. ie no nothing longer than 40ft. A truckers atlas book comes in handy there. Don't just rely on a GPS alone.
