There is not a toad brake requirement chart on the internet that is on a vendor of tow brake products web site that is true. Not ONE!

Are they a good idea? Absolutely.

In many cases the Brakebuddy chart (and others) is incorrect because the weight limits they refer to are specifically for trailers and not necessarily for a "toad" or a "towed motor vehicle". Each state needs to be examined via it's website and current statute. Nearly all ultimately refer to a "braking performance standard for the combination of vehicles" such as this from Florida 316.261:

2. The combination of vehicles, consisting of the towing vehicle and its total towed load, is capable of complying with the performance requirements of s. 316.262."

However, aux braking is a good idea.

Ca does have a length limit at 40'. If 39'11" you can drive with a class c. If 40 ft you need the b non-com. Most states have a GVWR limit, usually at 26klbs.

In CA some roads do have a 40' limit. I got a map sent to me a few years ago.

Not true stink, THe break is the 40' mark. 40' and under class c lic. Over 40' class a non-com. A class b you couldn't tow anything.

In B.C. a normal class 5 license is fine for a MH. If you tow a RV trailer >10,141lbs you must have a heavy trailer endorsement. The big "favourite" with L/E around here is pulling over MH's with air brakes and guess what...the driver doesn't have an air endorsement. And, that is very expensive when they tow it away to prevent the continuation of an offence.

Rather than speculate about CA, here's the CA state web site that gives you in information that 45' coaches are legal - on most roads.

Folks,

If I have my RV and TOAD registered in another state, am I safe driving in CA and following my home state licensing laws?

I understand I have to only drive on limited roads.

Hey Johnny;
There are a couple issues. If you are legally licensed to drive your MH in your state you will be legal in all other states and provinces due to reciprocal agreements.

Length and weight vary by jurisdiction and you are supposed to follow those rules in each locality. If not you can be ticketed.

There are quite a few states with tougher licensing requirements than CA. Here in NV I am required to have a non-commercial Class B license because my 40' coach exceeds 26,000 lbs. If I was a CA resident that would not be required and a regular driver's license would be sufficient.

Yea there's about 11 states that require it.
