Different years, same model, can be Tag or Non Tag... And Used vs New, fine you said both... But how far back? And gas vs diesel (As some gassers had a trailing tag too!)...

But, some coaches with tags at 40', at various years, include:
-Alpine
-American Coach
-Beaver's Patriots Thunder, Marquis
-Wanderlodge
-Prevost confessions
-Country Coaches (Allure/Intrigue/Magna/Affinity)
-Monaco - Dynasty/Executive/Signature (And Holiday Rambler equivalent.)
-Tiffen Allegro Bus/Zephyr
-Newmar - Dutch Star/Executive/London Aire (not sure on the higher food chain, if they had 40' with Tag...)
-Foretravel - U320/Phoenix/Nimbus (U295? and others?)
-Tripple E Empress (MAY have had one Tag coach?)
-Winnebago/Itasca ....
-...... Others...

And I know many, many more...

Suggest you narrow down your price point, and age of coach considered. And more definitive answers would be available...

Good luck on your research,
Smitty

Thanks Smitty for your response. I had no idea that there were so many 40 foot tags made. In most search fields there is not a tag/no tag axle choice. Right now I’m just shopping and looking seriously at a Newmar 4018. (2017-19) just asking to see what other choices are out there.

I looked at a Foretravel 38' motorhome that had a tag axle. It was at Motorhomes of Texas in Nacogdoches.

Back in the good old days, there were lots of 40' or less tags. I'm familiar with monaco's down to 36'.

Newer ones, it's much more cut and dried.
Up to 40' and 33,500 gvrw = no tag.
Longer and heavier = tag

That's because the use of a tag axle is a chassis engineering decision, not a customer option. The chassis is configured with a tag axle if it needs one to support the weight and length of the coach built upon it. The tag is added because it is necessary to support the coach, not because buyers think they are cool.

As oneknight says, there used to be tag axles included on 36 ft gas-powered coaches, back in the day when coach bodies grew faster than the motorhome chassis available to build on. I had a 1996 Southwind on a Ford F53 chassis that had been enhanced with a tag to add 3000 lbs of carrying capacity. As soon as Ford added heavier duty drive axles and suspension, the tag model was dropped.
