50 AMPS...all the time?

Over the weekend I noticed that the EMS panel in the coach showed that I was plugged into 50 amp power. Only one problem...I was plugged into a 30 amp power source.

I have since found that ALL sources of power (50, 30, 20/15 and the 8 kw generator) ALL show on the EMS as being connected to a 50 amp source.

That ain't right...so what's wrong?

Not sure what you have....but in my Bounder it only differentiates between 50 & 30...If lower than 30 it can’t tell and I have to manually set it lower. Maybe yours isn’t auto and must be manually set any time it is lower than 50 amps?

check this...

On that panel, there is a button on bottom row that allows you to select your correct input, just in case the automatic portion is not reading correctly (I think). Seems I have seen that happen previously, but this electronic stuff is learn and re-learn for me many times.

Here is a website explaining how it works.

You could be getting the " generator running " 12 volt signal, they mention.

On mine the Intelletec EMS display had a separate indicator for "Generator" as opposed to 50A or 30A. That allows for a generator that has only 120v output but can provide more than 30A. That should be on if the EMS thinks it is on genset power,

The amperage selector switch allows you to set a limit of 20A rather than 30A, because the EMS cannot tell the difference between 30A and 20A or even 15A.

My first action would be to reset the EMS controller board. That is usually sufficient to get it working right again. You do that by removing 12v power to it for 1bout 15 seconds or so. On most coaches, turning the battery disconnect off is sufficient, but on a few you may have to get at the board and actually unplug the 12v power wire.

I have the EMS 800 linked in the post above. It automatically indicates what service is providing the power. On all sources except 50 amp, the current being drawn is supposed to be shown in the window. It is not...there is no indication of current draw being shown, just like it was connected to a 50 amp service. I have not attempted to load the circuit to see if it load sheds as it is supposed to.

I'll do a little trouble shooting in a day or two, when I have a moment to get to it.

You will get better answers if you indicate what RV you have. Just put it in your signature then all your posts will show it.

How to make a signature for your RV so we can serve you better.

1 .Click "User CP" on left side of the screen in about the middle.
2. Click "Edit Signature" on left side 7 bars down under Your Control Panel.
3. Fill out your signature information.
4. Click "Save Signature"

Arch, I appreciate your tutorial, but it doesn't work on an IPad. I never use a computer to come here, just the iPad. The app's interface is different.

In any case, it is the Intellitec EMS800 system linked above.

Thanks for letting me know about the iPad. Will have to research that and make another tutorial.
