FormerBoater is exactly on the money, I forgot to unplug my 2004 Dutchstar & started the genny. There was a loud bang from somewhere. Had to replace my transfer swich to the tune of $750.00. Now I unplug before starting the genny.

Ours has a invertor and transfers over to the generator when started, but I still kill the shore power when I run the gen set to be safe. I carry a charger to charge either the chassis or house batteries if they get low for any reason. It also helps if the toad battery gets low. Charges much faster!!

I unload the electrical system before switching power. Anything that has a high draw like water heater, coffee maker or air-conditioning is off.
