We have a 1999 31' Seaview. I extended our living room-kitchen slide over the weekend, to exercise it. But now it won't retract. It starts back an inch or so, then the motor starts grinding. It's almost like it's stuck.

I tried to release the brake and hand crank it back it, but it went about six inches then seemed to be stuck. After I hand crank it in a ways it will go back out with the motor, but then won't close. I'm actually not sure that I've completely released the brake, but I figured it wouldn't close at all if I hadn't accomplished that.

I hear about "pushing" the slide back it, but I can't even budge it.

I have an appointment with a dealer on Thursday, but thought I would give this forum a try in case it could save me some money.

Sounds like gears possibly or the clutch pack slipping.
You "push" when running the motor in.

I did try pushing as my wife turned the key. It didn't seem to have any affect.

Could someone give me advice as to whether I can drive the MH a mile or so to the dealer with the slide partially out. Will I cause damage?

You wanna risk that?
I'm not worried about it being partial and just moving it around a lot, but what if you shear it off with a telephone pole.
Pay to play, sorry. Get a service call.

Moving with a partial slide-out could possibly cause windshield pop out I think a service call would be your best bet.

Here's an update. I did drive slowly about a half mile with the slide extended about 12 inches. The dealer said the slide was out of alignment and the gear head was stripped on the motor. They had to buy the entire motor assembly at a cost of $1080 plus 2-1/2 hours labor. The labor included adjusting the slide alignment.

I'll pick the MH up later this morning. I plan to ask the Service Tech to show me the correct slide operation in case I did something wrong to strip the gear.

I might have been able to replace the motor myself, but my back doesn't like to be twisted into such unusual positions.
