I also have older AC units. I found that there was alot of noise coming from the vibration of the compressor. Replace my old grommets under the compressor with new ones which reduced the noise.

Time for some replies.
Outboard, I changed the filters last fall just before we went on a short trip. I couldn't tell it made any difference but thanks for the suggestion.
Veraken, I think I'm going to try your idea. I don't know that I hear any actual vibration but any added isolation can only help. Thanks.
Goseejoe, what did you use to make the panels? I saw the wood spacers. I'm going to crank it up this weekend and see if there is much noise from the returns. I don't know that I would call this a fun project but, you are right. There are far worse things to deal with. My biggest problem is a lack of time. I still work. I'm not retired, just tired! Thanks for your help.
I'm sure new units would be quieter but, like someone else commented, if the duct work is poorly designed, there may not be a good way to remedy the situation. If all else fails, I guess I can wear earplugs to bed!

The method that I used to see if it was the isolation grommets was to turn on your AC, go on the roof and remove the AC cover, and press down on the metal plate that the compressor is mounted to. If it is the grommets, you should hear a significant reduction in the vibration/noise.

Sounds like a plan. I'll definitely give that a try. Thanks again!

Veraken, I just thought about something. I've never messed with one of these AC units. If I do have to replace the grommets, will I need to replace the seals where the unit mounts to the roof?

Simple answer No!. These grommets go between the bottom of the plate that the compressor is mounted to and the inside bottom of the AC. See 1:49 in the following video (which is for a residential unit), to see where they go.

Ok, thanks for that update. I didn't really think it would require removal of the entire unit but I wasn't sure. Thanks again!
