I have a viair 88p and I wouldn't recommend it for big high pressure tires.
Taking my truck's tires from 50 to 80 takes about an hour and it'll get hot enough to burn your finger prints off if you let it.

I have a Porter Cable 150 psig pancake unit to top off the tires each season
It easily gets my tires to 110 psig
I use the Vair should one go down on the road
So far the Michelin tires hold pressure all season long

I love my PC pancake compressor too. It's not quiet but it does the job fast and runs like a champ. I also run my tires at 110 psi.

Try changing out the chuck. Some air chucks have a floating center point and do not compress the valve step completely and can cause this situation. I have a couple chucks hanging around and one will not fill tires on the MH,

I have twin Viar 450's in my off road Jeep for airing up the tires after a run. I just bought a Fini contractors compressor for running air tools. It weighs about 30#, goes up to 150 psi and easily fits into a small side compartment. Operates on 110 volts. Makes it easy to top off 120 psi steer tires. $110 from Menards after rebate and better quality that the cheap Harbor Freight stuff.

Thank you for your input. This was exactly the issue. I pitched the chuck I had been using and used a different one and everything works well now.
