Advice driving from Oregon to Lake Tahoe

We have always used our class A in the summer months, never needing to worry about ice and snow. Now my kid's want to go ski in Tahoe. So off we go for more family fun.

Any advice driving a Class A over the pass to Tahoe from the West Coast?

We would normally take 89 and 395 during the summer. This is a narrow road, and the grade coming into South Tahoe is steep.

I was considering taking the I5 down to the 20 / I80, but I hear Donner Pass is a tough one in the winter.

How about Hwy 50 from the I5 to South Tahoe?

Any advice would be appreciated. I always take it slow, just want to find the most maintained route with the least chance for ice and snow.

Either 50 or 20 .... the pass which ever you take is not nice when it snows. The good opportunity is that there is enough traffic on 80 to clear the snow after a few days. So with the right weather window there is opportunity. The next week is not that window.

If it was my kids and my MoHo, airplane tickets to Tahoe would be the pass to negotiate. They will not fly if they can't make it. For the MoHo trip, it is a beautiful area when the weather is nice and the city of Tahoe has an interesting RV park.

I spend a lot of time in the Eastern Sierra and being there in my rig in the winter is not something I personally want to do. We have had unexpected snow storms roll in very fast in the late Fall and bury us in snow. Had to wait for the campground to get a Bobcat to dig everyone out.

Just prior to the Thanksgiving weekend several passes were closed down due to snow.

I agree with the previous comment about airplane tickets!

Yeah I have some advice...

It's a pretty winter snow flake thought...but I used to live in Lake Tahoe many moons ago and I would NOT even think of doing this in the winter. Stuff can turn ugly real quick. It may not turn out to be more family fun but family horror on 6 o'clock news.
