Air Brakes

I have a 2000 Coachmen Sportscoach with 275 Cummins. My purge valve was sticking on my air dryer. Rebuilt air dryer and replaced both filters. Now my air dryer pops off ever 15 sec. I have replaced the governor and the unloader valve and have no air leaks that I can find or hear. Still pops off every 15 sec. With vehicle on jacks released parking brake and still no air loss. My air gauges show a loss of about 10 psi in a 12 hour period. Any ideas what else to check. Thanks John

The air dryer cycles every time the compressor unloads. The most common cause is a leak in the small line between the air governor and the air dryer.

There is also a line from the air governor to the wet tank. A leak there will do the same thing. There are check valves between the wet tank and the primary/secondary tanks. The wet tank leaking won't show up on either gauge.

I had same problem...was dirt in the purge valve

Hi -

I had nearly identical symptoms and could not find a leak anywhere. I replaced the governor and blow off valve and still no joy.
After taking everything apart a second time, there was a little bit of 'crud' (for lack of a better term) in the purge valve where the spring holds the seal closed. If you take off the black little canister where the heater is and then look inside, you will see where there is a small metal plate with a rubber seal on one side and the spring contacts the metal plate to hold it in place. The foreign matter was preventing the seal from closing completely, and thus the continuous purging. In my case, the purge also lasted longer - it wasn't a short burst (as is normal) but was longer and you could see the pressure gauge drop while open/exhausting air.

I'm not at all sure that this is the same problem that you are having, but it is worth checking. I was at wit's end searching for a nonexistent leak when I decided to sort of "start over" and then found the problem. Has worked perfectly since.

Just a thought?

Want to thank everyone for their responses, it was a piece of crud causing the valve to stick in the open position. Even though you clean the air dryer really good and rebuild it guess it pays to start over from scratch and check everything again
