Air cleaner replacement

Went and pulled the original air filter from 2014 Providence since it is 3 years old.
Cross referenced it to a NAPA 2818 filter and when I opened the box and looked it over it was a piece of sxxx. The glue they used on the inside pleats was coming off and the outside cover had slots/holes that allow dirty air straight into the clean side of the filter.
Took it back and Napa guys were appalled and said they would be contacting the Tech people Mon Am.
Stopped at O'Rilleys and theirs had the same slots to the clean side.

Wonder how many of these filters have been pulled out of the box and installed by some mechanic with out a clue.

From what i have gathered both of these filters are made by Wix

There is a caveat to your last statement. Wix makes the filters to the customers specifications! Buy a Wix brand filter and compare the construction to the store branded product.

That's why doing your own work or watching CLOSELY while someone else does the work is so important. After a grease job run under on a creeper and see how may zirks have really been purged. Enlightening.

Years ago there were a ton of counterfeit oil filters on the market so I decided to buy my oil filters from the auto dealer parts department as well as any ignition parts.

So you may have gotten a counterfeit.

There are various organizations fighting this problem as my link shows.

Asian Anti-Counterfeit Association (AAA)

I use Fleetgard filters exclusively. My supplier is cost competitive to other brands and I don't have any problems. Shopping around for bargain filters is not only a waste of my time but a lot like playing Roulette.

As the old saying goes, "Pay me now or Pay me later"
