Air Filter Clogged

Newbie here! Sorry for the long post! Our very first trip we traveled from NW Ohio to Cherokee, NC. Did okay most of the way down but noticed some hesitancy, jerking and at times very little power. We ended up on 441 (Gatlinburg bypass) and by the grace of God made it. Hardest thing Iíve ever had to do! Heck of a road to take first trip on. Next trip was short just a three hour jaunt across the stateÖsame issues. I checked out all the posts on here and determined it had to be MAF, plug wires or fuel pump. For giggles, I pulled MAF and filter here at campgrounds and the filter was absolutely plugged with what looked like disintegrated mesh. Did the best I could to clean it as we do not have a toad yet. Fingers crossed this was the issue. Does anyone have any idea where that may have come from??

Does the "disintegrated mesh" look like air filter material (i.e. the filter itself has denigrated-- perhaps from water intrusion OR is this a foreign substance.

Please tell us what coach and chassis you have-- that may help get you answers more accurate for your coach.

Sorry, I was just going in to edit. It 05 Tiffin Allegro Bay 8.1 W22 with 35k miles. The filter was white AC Delco (original?) but the mesh stuff was black. So thick you could no longer see the pleats on one side of the filter. Was anything ever on top of tuba other than the chicken wire?

And, was the clean (engine) side of the filter still intact and clean, or had some of the debris gone past the filter.

Posting a picture would help quite a bit.

Clean side was okay. Nothing made it past filter. In hindsight, I should have snapped a pic. The debris is all in the fire ring now.

Change it immediately. The filter material can dust your turbo and or your motor. I wouldn't drive at all until one was shipped to me. 2 day Amazon prime.

I assume that was the original filter. Did you pickup and install a new filter. Looks like PO was not to big into doing mainteance?

It is an 8.1 gas engine, so no turbo.

But the "dusted" concern is the same.

I just saw on another forum that they used to come with a pre filter or some sort of bonnet that was black mesh. Sounds as if it may have been reusable. Maybe that was it. Will try to get new filter here before we leave. Thanks to both of you!

Ya, 16 years on an air filter is way past being on borrowed time.

That's what I was thinking about. It may have had a foam "pre-filter" that disintegrated leaving behind the mess you found. You should be able to get a filter at the nearest town.

GOOD LUCK & WELCOME!

So, you're the one who burns garbage in the campfire rings.

Sure sounds like you dodged a bullet on that one!
