Air horns
I just purchased a 99 Gulf Stream Tourmaster 8.3 Cummins and the air horns aren't working. I was wondering first if these are operated off the engine air or a seperate compressor? Secondly where is the solenoid located and accessed from? Thanks

All that I am aware of are operated off of a separate compressor. I have a 2002 Ultimate Advantage and all of the parts are located on the front wall above the generator.

I guess it depends on if you have air brakes or not. If you have air brakes then you have an air tank and most likely the horns are air operated from that tank. If no air brakes then they could be electric or have a small compressor. If the horns say Hadley on them then they are air horns. Hadley is the leading RV Air Horn maker.

My air horns have a 12 v solenoid in the generator compartment to run them.
The solenoid looks like these

You should check and see if you have voltage at the solenoid when yu press the horn button

My air horns have a separate compressor from the auxiliary tank of the engine air compressor.
It is located in the basement compartment forward of the pilot seat.
Try removing the rear end of the air horns on the roof. Clean and reinstall. That is all it took to get mine working again.
They are Hadleys.

You might also check to see if you have a switch on the dash that says "City/Hwy" and if so switch it to HWY. My coach has 2 types of horns, City is a weak car type horn and HWY is the air horns.

IF your chassis is a Freightliner, chances are your air horns are sourced from the main air system on the chassis. There is usually a tap up front where the air for the air horns is supplied.
Most likely a bad solenoid. This should be mounted up front next to where the air is supplied to the horns.

you might check the ground, it took me almost a year, before i found out that it was just a loose ground..

Thanks for all the great input! Guess I should have been a little more specfic. I do have air brakes, it is a Spartan Chassis and it has a switch for the Grover air horns or regular. The city horn works but it is kind of weak. However, the city horn works in both positions on the switch. If someone cuts me off (like the trip home) I just want to be able to let them know I'm back there . I was hoping someone out there had the same coach and could tell me an exact location, size, and description. I'll check it out a little closer after the snow lets up here in Southern PA.

I repeat check the ground,, I have a 99 ds, with a Spartan chassic, and the air horns would not work, and it has a switch on the dash for the air horns, I tighten up the ground and the have worked fine. It should be up front on the drivers side. hope this solves your problem...

Your city/highway switch may not be "switching"... check that first... if the highway aren't working but the city do in both positions, check that first

If the city horns work in both positions I would look there first. Sounds like something in the switch is not working correctly. Don't know if you are tripping a relay or what but if it is not switching between city and air that is the first place to look.

Can I blow the air horns now?
I am the driver and I have never used the air horns because my wife says they might scare someone into driving off the road. She doesn't like loud noises of any kind. She would rather have me slow down and let someone finish cutting in front of us. So I guess that I would have to say, "honey, can I blow them now?" Happy travels, Joe

First mistake was letting the DW know there was an option!!!!!!! Now ask her which is better them driving off the road or us? Now turn em on!!!!!!!!!!!
