Air Spring ride improvement
I recently bought a 2006 Four Winds Hurricane. It is 30ft long with no slide outs. It has leaf springs. I'd like to improve the ride. When traveling on the highway and hitting a pothole or rough road on the freeway the coach shutters and cabinet doors open. What has been the experience with installing air springs on the ride? I know there have been other posts but was interested in recent experiences. Is the ride vastly improved or is it hype? Thanks

I installed them on the back of a leaf sprung, gas coach, to fix a side to side leveling issue. If it's a softer ride your after, dont waste your money !

My coach is also listing to the right. I take it that the air springs solved the problem? Was it a better solution than replacing the leaf springs? Thanks

Yeah, air springs did the job leveling. I was only about 1.5" different.
Better than replacing leafs, could'nt say.

Air bags will not really give you a soft cushy ride, because you are still using the factory leaf springs as your main suspension. What the air bags will do is, level the ride height, help reduce sway, and will keep the coach from porpoising after hitting a dip or bump on the highway.

To level the coach do you install front or rear air bags or does it need both?

Normally to level a coach, you can just run rear air bags. If you are really looking to reduce sway, I would suggest going with front and rear bags.

I beg to differ. I had a 1995 class C on a E350 chassis (first motorhome). I installed Firestone air springs on the rear and Air Lift coil spring air bag inserts in front. That was the best riding and driving motorhome. Very stable passing trucks and buses and in the winds. Absolutely no sway. You could sleep in the bedroom and not even know your were going down the road at 70 mph. Well worth the money.

I added air springs to my Class A. I air up to 45 psi rear, and about 5 psi fronts. This helps ride for my case. I also upgraded to aluminum wheels.

Each wheel weighs about 34lbs, vrs 68lbs for steel, plus the aluminum runs true. I believe it makes a difference. Wife is happier with the ride.

Ford had the wheels for the F-53 made in Mexico. The specs called for 3 thousands of a inch out of round. Many were way out of round. Changing the rims to aluminum was the best fix. Yes changing those to a aluminum wheels really helped the ride.
