The entry steps on our 2017 Tiffin Allegro Bus have not been fully retracting lately. When viewed with the steps extended, the bottom step is hinged at the back and as the steps retract the bottom step is supposed to fold upwards. Sometimes it works fine and other times the bottom step is left leaning (drooping) out at the top with a 1"- 1 1/2" gap when the steps should be fully retracted. It can easily be pushed closed but it is sometimes hanging open while driving and if it dropped down further could become a collision obstacle.

I have cleaned and oiled the step slide mechanisms - to the limited extent that they are accessible. There are no springs that I can see. Tiffin tech says the force of the entire step assembly moving inwards is supposed to force the last step to fold up. Someone said there might be a cam that needs to be adjusted.

I don't have the coach at home to attach pictures which I can do later if requested. Has anyone out there had, or have, this problem know how to correct?

Who made the steps? 2 step or 3 step?

Three steps, 47 series, made by KwiKee Products a division of Lippert Components. I called Tiffin again and got a different guy than I did last time. This guy was more helpful. While he was uncertain as to what to do he thought it might be a cam adjustment and sent me the owner's manual.

I called Kwikee from the number on the manual and spoke with their customer support guy who knew exactly what the problem was. There are cams attached by a bolt on both the forward and aft sides of the bottom step. It makes contact when the step is retracted and forces and holds the lower step in the upright closed position. Over time the cam wears and needs to be rotated so that it maintains enough pressure. A two bolt adjustment that he says will eventually need to be done on all steps of that design.

He recommended that I spray the heck out of the slides, saturating them with WD 40 or PB blaster (which I had never heard of) let the gunk and crude run out of the slides and contact points then apply a dry film lube and I'd be good to so. I will try all that until next week when I can get the coach here to the house.

You will learn to love PB Blaster. It is an excellent penetrating oil and works wonders on rusted nuts and bolts.

Must be the season for sticking steps, mine would not retract Monday morning when leaving an over night stop to head home. Loaded mine with silicone spray and did the trick. I need to clean the slides and lube with dry lube for a more permanent deal though.
