Always get written estimate even on small jobs.
Broke my own rule, always get a written estimate on any RV work. I went to a local shop that only does RV refurbish work, no mechanical work. I called the place and the owner was very nice, I asked if they sold new Captain Chairs for my class A? He said yes we do but we can rebuild your seats better than any new ones you can buy and do it for half the price of new seat. Well I told him you just made my day so I immediately removed my seats and went to his shop.
I had shopped the new Flexsteel seats and a set was about three grand plus shipping. So the owner tells me how he would upgrade my seats with better foam, gel inserts and high grade faux leather fabric. So we unloaded my seats and he wrote up the order. Humm it was a little over 3400.00 with tax. But because of the upgrades I agreed. I asked what happened to the half price deal he said I could get on the phone. He said well that is with basic material and no up grades. Being that Flexsteel is months behind on orders because of steel issues I ordered the seats.
I asked the owner if he knew of a local shop that did carpet binding for carpet I bought for my slide out. He had told me he had a in-house upholster for the seats and he would do the binding for 2.50 a LF. So the next day I dropped off the carpet. A couple weeks later he called and said the carpet was done. I went and got it to install myself. A month later he called and said the seats were done. So I went to get them and pay for the seats and carpet binding. Turned out he was not there at the time and his workers divulged that they do not have a in house upholster they in fact send the seats out to a upholstery place in the next town over. OK, then they said they send the carpet to another local shop to get it done. OK
Turned out to be a carpet store I had called and they said they charge 1.25 a Lf to do the binding. Still OK, But that is where I should have gotten that little job in writing. Because the shop owner tried to charge me $250.00 dollars for just 13 feet of caret binding. I told him he told me $2.50 a LF and he said yes but he had to send a guy to the next town and also pay extra to have the pattern I provided cut so two hundred and fifty dollars was correct. I said you never told me there was extra charges. Then when I challenged that price and told him I knew what he was charged he got mad and told me he would take the whole charge off my bill but then told me to never come back to his shop. Like I would ever go back to a place that tried to overcharge me that much. I offered to pay a reasonable charge but he said no just pay for the seats and don't come back. Kinda feel like he knew the gig was up and I knew what I was talking about so he had no argument other than he was ripping me off.
So even small jobs get the cost in writing. I think as my Mother once told me as she got older some people think older folks lose common sense and some try to take advantage of them. I have no issue with a shop making a profit but I refuse to be taken advantage of. By the way the seats turned out great.
2006 35 Foot HR Admiral Chevy 8.1 Gas, Bought it 2015 and pretty much rebuilt or replaced most of it inside and out. I am a DIYer and have enjoyed the process the last two years. But guess you are never done when you own a RV.
