Am I running too HOT?

Driving in W. Texas headed to New Mexico. Noticed my temp gauge needle floating between the A and L in "normal" range. Pulled over and put Scan Gauge on water temp. Here is what I saw: much of the time temp was between 200 - 204 range. Going up slight incline it would climb to 205 - 207. Then back down to 202. On longer slight inclines the temp would rise to 210,11, even 216 once. At higher temps I would pull over and let it cool down. I am driving at 65, hauling a small car and outside temp is 90. I am assuming I have a problem, right? Any suggestions? I am not opposed to using a truck repair shop in the town I am in. What is normal temp range for this engine? At 216 I was almost in the red spot of normal range on gauge. Any help would be appreciated. There is 91000 K on the engine.

Nope, your all good, that motor runs hot, I have same. Did same thing, freaked myself out, wasted money on Silverleaf VMSpc, only to find out ISB runs hot.

I actually pulled into Cummins in Las Vegas on a trip to get some help. They told me motor would be fine running at 215 all day long, which was my highest temp.

Still kind of freaked out, changed all my fluids just to be super safe, didn't change anything.

Drive it like you stole my man.

Sounds high to me. My Cummins ISC will de-rate at 220 (according to my manual). Have seen it go up to 210 on long uphill runs but typically stays in the 185-190 range running like you describe. The only exception is running into a stiff headwind where the boost stays WAY UP. Only way to deal with the headwind is to slow down!

Have you cleaned your radiator lately? Rear radiator coaches are infamous for clogging up the radiator. Side radiators are less likely to have a problem but still require periodic cleaning.

I think you're running hot. Call Cummins to verify what the correct operating range should be.

Chances are you have a clogged rear radiator which is not properly cooling the engine. There are lots of posts on this forum regarding this topic and how to remedy.

Rich- I had a 2000 GeorgieBOy DP w/ Cummins 260 ISB. My temps normally stayed between between N&O on the gauge. Even on long grade it seldom reached straight up. One common problem during that period was grime collecting on the rear Radiator and blocking airflow. Periodic cleaning with simple green, flushing from both sides seemed to help. Temps are running a little high. Would look at cleaning. Caution to avoid bending radiator fins with pressure washer. Had that chassis and engine for 15 years.
From Freightliner:
My chassis used fig9 (before March 2000)

How were your tranny temps? Sounds like things are working fine. If you were pulling hills at 65 I would slow down. You are burning a lot of hp to go from 55 to 65.

Be sure your radiator is clean of course.

X2.

Cummins says clean the rad on rear rad coaches every 7,500 miles , I'd add annually to that after seeing how bad a neighbors new rad looked after two years, with less than 7,000 miles.

I have a 300HP 5.9 ISB. Mine runs 184F on that flats towing or not towing. On hills towing a 5000LB toad I've seen 200. I think yours sounds on the hot side. I keep my radiator clean which is key.

Is ours a DP or a FRED? No matter what I would clean the radiator just to make sure. But overall it sounds normal for a 5.9. Change you air filter also. My 3500 would run around that temperature when towing in the heat on hills but it would just crank up the fan and run like a bat out of hell. I will admit that I could not run the AC on high because it would get too darn cold. Mine I miss that truck.
205 temp running up hill seems normal in the heat of the summer with the AC running. Roll with it and drive it like you stole it.

Ok, checked with Cummings: recommended maximum heat is 212, so I do have an issue. Called Good Sam Club gave me the name of a repair shop 2 miles from my location, waiting for them to plug in and analyze. Will update when I learn more. Hoping cleaning radiator will do trick.

Even though someone said that engine runs hot, that's too hot. You're running above 200 on the flats, into the 210's on slight grades and even 216, what happens when you climb a steep grade. I'm guessing you'll be getting into overheat range. These engines want to crack exhaust manifolds when you run them hot.

If you don't know when the last cleaning of the radiator and charge air cooler occurred, that needs to be done before throwing money at other suspected issues.
