Amber lights on front of coach question

Hi,

My coach has 5 Amber lights at the top of the front (shown in photo below).

The left one is not working, I went to replace it and the light fitting was secured with sealant, I did not want to damage the lens removing the sealant.

Maybe a stupid question but what purpose are these lights for?

Ther're called Clearance Lights, required for any vehicle over 96" in width, my recollection.

They're called "Clearance Lights". I'm not sure if they are required by law but I suspect they are. You will see them on all trucks over a certain height. I was told some years back by a Highway Patrolman that if one light is out that is a ticketable offense.

Take a boxcutter and cut around the sealant to remove the lens.

Don’t forget to clear-sealant it back up or water will get in the lens and short it out.

Really? I have 5 amber on the front, 5 red on the rear and of course the ones on the side. Not one is sealed, they all work and none have water in them. I suspect the previous owner had a leak at the lights and that was the solution. The gaskets behind ours dry rotted and water leaked in behind them. Previous owner put silicone all around the lights. May have worked for awhile but water eventually got behind silicone at the top, couldn't get out at the bottom so ran inside. I removed all the silicon and installed new gaskets, no leaks.

They are required by law. Some states only require 2 on the front and 2 on the rear, some require 5 front and rear so you'll find 5 on just about every MH. They're meant to show not only the height but the width of the vehicle as well.

Don't know that they really show either that well. They're not at the top of MH and A/C units, antennas, etc. are even higher up. The outside lights aren't really at the outside edge of the vehicle either.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I will replace the bulb in the spring.

Not a stupid question at all!

The outer two lamps are "clearance lamps," and the inner three are "identification lamps." See this link for details.

Might as well convert to LED while you are at it. Make sure they work and seal them tightly. Probably be the last time you touch them.
