I just took out the anode rod and emptied my Suburban water heater for the winter. Should I put the rod back in or leave it out?

I leave mine out.... (but I don't think it maters).

I replace it finger tight until Spring. I feel it keeps critters out of the tank. You can also just leave it inside the hatch and replace it in the Spring if you'd like.

Ditto .... you would be surprised at what will want to make a home in an open tank

With the tank drained, flushed out, why not Teflon tape it up good and reinstall it.............by the spring...........you might just forget to tighten it up.........
I see no reason not to put it back in..........?

My thoughts exactly! I do the same when I drain the water out of the block on my boat. Everything goes back together and ready for the next season

I've found that after sitting empty and dry all winter, scale can be flushed off the walls of the tank with my flush wand. That's another reason I leave it loose, I flush each Spring when getting it ready for use again.

here's something you might consider... stick a tape measure to the back of the tank... and see how deep it is.. the next time your at home depot buy a replacement for a home hot water heater.... usually $10-13.... cut it 2" shorter than the depth of the tank.. in my case that's almost 40% more anode.... less money than the RV supply and more surface area....
