Aqua Hot questions
I am a proud new owner of a Tiffin Phaeton with a couple of questions about using the aqua hot system. Since it is summer (well, almost summer) there is no need to use it to heat the coach. But it is still needed for hot water.
1) Will running it on electric only be enough to provide hot water to take a shower?
2) How long after you turn it on should I expect to get hot water?
Thanks,
Larry

1) Probably not. I have a 600D which has two electric elements and I turn on the burner for showers.
2) 20 min or so, but that depends on the model AquaHot.

1) It is enough for me if it has been on electric over night or equivalent.
2) On 120v: Overnight On Diesel: 10 minutes or so. In my '04 Hydro-Hot the water is heated by the engine when running. So if you take a shower after driving you won't need the electric or diesel.

My unit only has one electric heating element and even during the winter in SE Florida all I use is electric 24/7. When boondocking I’ll turn the diesel boiler 10 minutes before taking showers and off after. I would say it will take the electric 30 minutes.

Actually I am trying to figure out how to use the burner less. I am just not sure how to ask about it. Would it be reasonable to run the elec element while hooked to shore power and then turn on the burner a few minutes before taking a shower? BTW: I have a 450D

HI Everybody
It all depends on cold water temps. If you alone take a shower you can use elect. now if wife jumps in right after you no. I leave my elerct on all the time an if needed I turn on diesel before I get in shower an you do not h
have to wait for hot water.

We have the 100-02s that only has one 1850w electric element.
for us when connected to a pedestal I have both the burner and the electric on,
The electric maintains the water temps, and the burner only fires off when taking a shower or when using the washer. (burner once in a while will fire off, but no biggie as it uses very little fuel (diesel)

450D here. That’s exactly how we do it if BOTH of us are taking a shower. If only one of us, we find if the electric has been on awhile, it’s enough. We do the short showers( water not running constantly). It works out great. Also, as stated above, running down the road, and right after stopping, you have plenty of hot water.
In colder weather, the Aquahot is a great engine warmer before starting. Pretty ingenious all around system.

Your concept to run electric all the time and turn on the diesel shortly before showering is recommended. We do that, with a 450D in an Allegro Bus. The Hydro Hot unit is great, but take the time to learn the system, watch your coolant levels, do the service and make sure it is protected in winter.

Exactly how I do it. And whether I'm on 30 amp of 50. Need 50 amp to run both elements.

I qualify this by assuming you have a diesel fire model and not one that runs on propane..if so please disregard my opinions
On mine I turn both on and forget about it. In the grand scheme of things you will not burn enough diesel to notice. The Aqua-Hot diesel burner needs to run every so often. It’s when you don’t run it is when the nozzle gums up and then you start having problems with it not firing. The guy that services mine in the Houston area said if you run it at least once a month you can go up to three years between nozzle replacements. Don’t run it and you will be replacing it every year or less. What few dollars you’ll save on fuel you will be spending on maintenance.
If you turn both on it will not fire up the diesel burner until the water temp drops and it requires more heat. The wife and I take back to back showers and a lot of times at this time of year the diesel burner never comes on. I’ve not heard it come on in the last few days except once when I took a long extended shower and the wife showered right afterward. On mine the electric side is 15,000 btu, the diesel burner is 50,000 btu.
How ever you want to configure yours be sure to run it thru a couple cycles each month to keep it healthy and cleaned out. Good luck with your coach and aqua-hot they are terrific together

The older Aqua hots ( I have a 100-02s 2003 model ) have two sets of thermostat one for the electric and one for the diesel burner. The electric is set about 5degrees higher than the diesel. The result is the electric maintains the boiler heat unless it draws down 5-10 deg then the diesel burner kicks in. The newer ones I guess don’t do this as they use one thermostat. When I had mine rebuilt this spring that’s how it was explained to me.

This past weekend we stayed at a park with only 30 amp shore power. We turned on the electric element and not the burner. It was pretty hot outside so the ac was working pretty hard and the ems shed the aqua hot elec element and as a result had no hot water. I think this would not have happened had we been on 50 amp. What can I do to avoid this when on 30 amp?
