Are there good used DP's under $40,000?

I did search the topic - came up empty. Sorry if it's been beaten to death.

In the 2000-2006 (or so) range is it possible to find a good DP under $40,000...ideally under $35,000 to allow for needs?

Thanks!

Bought my Dutch Star nearly 4 years ago for $26K. Had 62K miles on the clock. Happy with it so far. Put only 14K miles on it...

I paid $73,000 ...ten years ago .
Now I probably wouldn't let my coach go for $40,000 US .
But some owners might.

Peter-

On RVtrader.com, there are currently 71 diesels, model year 2000-2010, at $35,000 or less (link here). Most are Class As (some are misclassified). Probably a similar count over at RVT.com.

You just need to pick out the "good" ones... and for that you need to look through a lot of threads and do a lot of research. Start with the "Class A Motorhomes" forum (link here), then branch out from there.

It is possible. Quite a few options pop out at that price range when looking in sites like Kijiji, Craigslist. Not to mention dedicated RV sales online sites.

As you probably know, repair bills (and even regular maintenance) for DPs are higher compared to gas motorhomes. However, in terms of space, drivability and comfort, DPs are hard to beat.

As long as the bones are good everything else is fixable along the journey. The quality of some older coaches is so much better I think it is worth the work and in the end and it is less expensive than buying something newer.

Yes! But I would never sell our 2004 MADP for that cheap... You could get lucky or get what you pay for.

I bought mine 3 years ago just over $30k, Cummins, Spartan, Allison with a lot of Dometic components. It's my first and it was a good rig in it's day. I've been able to repair and maintain it because of the name brand components so it"s worked out. I know a lot more about buying one now. It's fun, good luck.

For sure - the trick of course is to find the good ones, the ones with "good bones". I have been diving deep into the threads and have also found the source for inspectors. It's reassuring to hear from those who have been successful in this price range.

It's far more difficult and dare I say scary than buying a used car. There I know pretty much exactly what I'm getting into and have always been able to ferret out a good deal. But then I know from a lifetime of experience what to look for and what to avoid. Not so here. I've never owned a diesel vehicle. The forums are full of opinions on every engine make and model half good and half bad on all. Yikes!

I'll need to rely on the inspector for condition of the house and all...it's a leap of faith and I gotta tell you that leap comes with a price higher than I've ever paid for anything that didn't have a foundation under it

Some Newmars being discussed great coach old or new you will see many older Newmars on market waiting to go some more miles and years.
This link will help you solve problems or correct potential problem.
All the links below in my signature will lead you to older coach's and appliances in them plus help you fix them.
Also threads by older coach owners with their fix's and upgrades of their old coach.
We all had to start some where with a older coach and work our way up the line if you want too but we have many happy owners with their older coach just doing fine.
Coach inspector's are just like house inspectors they miss a lot of items, you will fine more living in the coach which is better because you will be learning hands on, like most of us did.
Good luck in what ever coach you decide on just ask questions in that forum about slides or chassis possible problems.

I bought a very nice Alpine Coach 36FDDS almost 2 years ago for ~$40K and it's been an amazing coach!!

I would be looking at only high-end products in that time frame but you should be able to find a nice Newmar, Monaco, Beaver, Alpine, Country Coach and possibly Tiffin from that era. most of these coaches were well above a 1/4 million dollars new and the quality of those coaches is better than most new coaches these days at almost any price.

I recommend something with a Cummins 350-400HP motor and Allison transmission.

I'd stay away from lesser brands, not going to list them as it will likely start the wrong debate but you should be able to find a nice example of one of these high-end coaches in your search.

Good Luck in your hunt!

Thanks!
This certainly is attractive although they don't seem to disclose miles in the listing...
