The ignition switch should turn off a solenoid that controls fuel flow. It's either a valve or possibly a relay that shuts off an electric fuel pump. You'll have to investigate what component isn't being properly shut off. Either check with Cummins or a garage with experience with your vintage engine. You might also check that in the off position your ignition switch has truly shut down power. Sometimes a modification to make one thing active will allow power to backfeed through a circuit to energize another.

Most likely your fuel shut off solenoid is acting up. Could be as simple as the linkage needs cleaning and some lube. You need to watch it while starting to see if is moving. It maybe hanging up when it won't shutdown. Thus link will show you what to look for.

Fuel Shut Off Solenoid Replacement

If you haven't done so already, get your ESN (engine serial number) and go to https://quickserve.cummins.com/info/index.html and register your vehicle. It's a great source for info on replacement parts. You can also call Cummins Customer Service 1-800-343-7357 and they will be able to help you (you will still need your ESN).

I purchased a fuel shutoff solenoid, which I carry as a spare, on ebay for $30.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

Sounds like a bad ignition switch! Keep her between the ditches!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Put a test light on the fuel solenoid wire and see if power is dropping when you turn the key off.

Try it with engine running and with engine off. If the power stays on, only with the engine running, you may have a back feed from the alternator. Has that been changed and modified ?

I’ve experienced my toad has a hot wire to keep battery charged and when it’s plugged up my engine won’t die. I had to install a diode in the circuit to keep toad battery from back feeding the coach engine.

If the wire to the Toad battery comes off the RV chassis battery, no problem. If you're tapping the power from an ignition switched source of 12v, yes, you will keep the ignition circuit charged even with the key off. A diode will reduce voltage by a small amount, I'd remove it if you can find a direct tap from the battery.
