Atwood Electric/Gas water heater

I have the Atwood GC10A--4E with a dual switch one for Electric and one for LP. There a red light in the middle. I have never seen the light lit. When is this light supposed to come on. The water heater works just fine. I am just curious why I have never seen the light on. Is there a fuse or something blown?

Correct, and on a related note, using them both at the same time improves the speed of reheating the water noticeably.

The gas ignition fail light may come on momentarily when you first switch on the LP switch. Don't be too quick to shut the switch off. The switch does not directly open the gas valve. The gas valve is opened after the igniter comes on.

RED light is a FAULT LIGHT

Light is illuminated if Propane Flame fails to 'prove' (3 attempts to light and prove then 'lock out')

Light is illuminated if ECO (High temp t-stat OPENS 180*F)....this is whether on Electric or Propane as BOTH use the same set of t-stats
ECO will reset when temp of water drops below 150*F
ECO should only open when T-stat (normal temp t-stat has failed to open 140*F)

To 'RESET' water heater FAULTS
Turn ON/OFF Switch to OFF
Wait 30 seconds.....turn back ON (correct fault condition first)

Above ONLY applies to Atwood model WHs pre 2004
2003 and prior models had different sets of t-stats and simplified controls
