Atwood Levellegs Jack FYI

Just a couple of FYI's that might help you with electric leveling jacks. This the second time that I have had an alarm on the same jack, front passenger side. Also, the only problems I have had with the system, now 11 years old. The first time, the cause of the alarm was one of the braided brush leads touching the motor housing. Simple fix, twisted the braid enough to keep it clear of housing.
This time I discovered that grease from the gearbox had leaked past the bushing and sealing washer and was coating the armature and, particularly, the commutator. Again, a simple fix - clean the armature/commutator and brushes with electrical cleaner and polish the commutator. I also cleaned a lot of the grease out of the gearbox, leaving enough for lubricating the gears but not the excessive amount that was in there.

Motor screaming

My issue with levelegs motor is it makes a lot of noise when retracting (less when extending). Have taken the leg off the coach but how do you get into the motor? Have examined the gear case but that seems to be relatively clean (with some grease). Motor/gear box makes the same noise when removed from the leg so assume it's the motor. Any clue to rebuilding the motor would be appreciated.

Atwood levellegs jack FYI

One of my jacks does the same thing, noisey when retracting, but has been working fine for a long time. Not sure what that's all about.

Mine jack is quiet now

FYI. I took my jack off the coach and opened up the gear case, all looked good although maybe a little low on grease. Still made the screach so I opened the motor. Nothing looked too bad there, blew out some dust, put it back together and still had the sound. Finally, on a lark, I sprayed silicone on the shaft that holds the 'nut' that you can turn manually to raise the jack and voila, the sound went away. Put it all back together and back on the coach and no sound and everything levels nicely. Since that shaft is available from under the coach you may try spraying it. However, until the jack refuses to go up - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
