I'm not saying yours is exactly like mine but this may help you if it is similar: As said above, look at slide bolt placement on another door. On mine, the slide bolt breaks in the middle and lets the bottom piece fall into the catch. I have to reach in from the end with my L shaped awning rod and push the bolt up while putting just enough pressure on the door to relieve the tension and then pull out when the bolt clears the catch.
I buy new locks and remove the bolt from the new and use it to replace in my existing handle so that my paint scheme and key locks remain the same.
