Basement Door Latch is stuck

2007 Dolphin LX 35 foot. Basement door latch just stopped opening. On the right side looking at it from outside. It is the second door from the entrance door. The right side latch would not budge when I pulled on the door handle. I can see it with the first door open so I forced it in by using screw driver and small hammer tapping on it. Pulled the handle and it opened, but latch would not return/pop back out. closed door and it popped back. Looks to me like there is a spring inside that may have sprung. ?? before I tear it all apart (saw one video that said to cut a hole on the inside door to get to it. )
there is door latch cover on the inside of it...i removed that and all looks like it is working properly. so I turn to the experts here who probably have a simple fix idea.

Does the handle feel like it is opening all the way with the door closed? If it releases the plunger with the door open but not when the door is closed the door may need adjusting to have less pressure on the plunger. Graphite lock spray May free plunger and allow freer movement

The "dead bolt" that locks the door has a screw that holds the dead bolt in place. Loosen the screw and adjust as needed. Also give all moving parts a shot of silicone spray.

If the screws on the inside cover are too tight, it will restrict the movement of the bolt. Make them snug, not tight.
