Bathroom Exhaust Fan

My automatic exhaust fan motor continues to run after the vent lid has closed. It makes a loud clicking noise. It sounds like the motor is still trying to close the lid but it is closed. Anyone experience this and what was the fix?

Welcome to iRV2.

Depending on the roof vent brand, there may be a contact terminal that needs cleaning ( that tells the control board the lid is closed ) or a switch disconnected. Most times viewing the vent fan from the roof will; with the lid open; provide major clues to it's operation .

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

If it's make by Fan-Tastic, I would call them. They have great tech support!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

If it's a fan-tastic press up on the motor and it will stop. They made the shaft length a 1/4" too short - I just replaced motors and mechanisms and they do the same thing.

While you're up there, spray a little (little) silicone spray on the pin switch. Work the switch a few times in and out (up and down). The switch turns the motor on and off. Its a metal switch, can't miss it. And you could also clean the area under the lid where the lid meets the black gasket, use alcohol (rubbing, not JD!) then take a small (small) amount of silicone grease (plumbers grease, ACE has it in a small tin) and grease that black gasket all around. No more stuck lids. And you're good for another 100,000 miles!

The plunger type switch up above controls the fan motor. The motor OP is referring to is the lid motor (even if he didn't realize it). I'd spray the plunger with electrical spray cleaner.

Went on roof today and removed Maxxair housing and fan lid. I didn't see any switch or shutoff for the fan lid. The clicking noise is on the inside of what looks like a little gear box.

It is possible your lid switch ( plunger ) rusted away/broke off. The plunger opens the circuit ( cuts power) to the motor when compressed. Look closer... Almost all fans have one.

Rick, did you notice a brand on the fan/vent? I agree with Stan that there should be a small plunger type switch on the top on the hinge side. As the lid motor raises the lid the plunger starts to come out and at a certain point, the fan motor will start.
Here are pics of mine when I was working/replacing parts
