Actually there is (or was) such a law, from what I have been led to believe.. But not in the United states.

One of the requirements for obtaining a driver's license in at least one former country was the ability to do a major overhaul on the car, You had to actually dissassemble, re-assemble and start the car to show you knew how to fix it if it should break down.. Now that country is history, but it's member states, are still about, and they may have kept the law.

That was, by the way, The United Socialist Soviet Republic.
Could you imagine our country requiring all licensed drivers to be able to disassemble and reassemble an engine? The automobile industry would fail, not enough licensed drivers available to buy cars. ):

I can remember being 16, going to the auto parts store and asking for everything I needed to tune up my 1960 Ford. I got the parts home, looked under the hood, and wondered "what the he'll did I get myself into?" I knew where the spark plugs went, but had no idea where the points and condenser went. I took off the distributor cap because I had a new one and I knew I could replace it, and I discovered the location of the parts.

Today with 100,000 mile tune-up schedules, fuel injection and all the electronics required, I'm lost. Sorry to get off topic here. I did read a Prevost had a 24 volt electrical system.

I am constantly amazed at the lack of understanding of simple automotive electrical systems.
Hamguy- Would that be the Analog or Digital variety?
