Battery is bubbling and fuming

Hi,
One of my house battery is humming, bubbling and obnoxious fumes spewing out of all the cells I thing is called hydrogen? smell's like sulfur to me, the battery in question engine running show 3.09 AMPs and 13v the inverter is on float the remote RC6 panel is normal 13.5v the Amps DC shows no Amps usage and green float charge unlike when the engine is off the RC6 show 13.5v and Amps one digit above the High Bat at 75 Amps.
With "out" the shore power the battery show 12v and the RC6 12v and no Amp DC no change in the battery's condition.
The 3 battery's I have I purchased 2018 I think

My bet is you have a bad cell or cells and battery is end of life. I would be reluctant to use shore power. Last thing you want is the battery to explode.

Sounds like the battery has failed.

May want to remove charge and let it cool before disconnecting.

Wear appropriate protection, especially your eyes!

Very wise advice in the above post! Unplug, and keep far away until the smell goes away. Yes its hydrogen gas, so think about the Hindenburg. Yes, wet cell batteries can and do explode when a spark ignites the hydrogen gas.

Imho the rest of them need replaced.. take pictures 1st .. before you touch anything.. use all safety precautions.. so.. replace them all.. and tell us the dates on each.. please.. and tell us the dates on your chassis batteries.. good thing you found that.. it puts extra strain on engine alternator.. when under way.. the engine alternator charges those. And inverter when on shore power. You could burn one or both up.. then real money.. oh.. do real good job cleaning cables and re seal with spray battery post sealer.. just re looked at pictures.. yes.. sorry.. it's going to be a big job.. you may have to replace some cables.. see how they look after cleaning.. if you don't know.. put caps on battery cells and pour soda pop on battery post.. they can all remain connected.. this will dissolve corrosion.. on cables.. or baking soda and water mix.. big job a head.. check battery bay for damage.. just suggestion
Good luck and keep us posted

off gassing hydrogen sulfide. nasty stuff if you breath it. Had one of the house batteries on a previous coach go bad. From storage shed to my house is about 400 feet. You could smell it that far. I expect you might as well replace them both. Don't want to be out and have them both go south on you

A bad battery will off gas like that when failed.

You always replace all batteries that are connected in parallel or series. Replacing only the bad battery is false economy.

Always treat any battery bank as a single battery.

Bad battery is the most likely problem. How old are the ones you have?

You need all new house batteries! Don’t mess around trying to charge them, unless you like first hand experience with bombs! Ask me how I know, I have first hand, up close and personal experience with that! Fortunately I knew there was an issue and kept my head on the other side of the hood. No injury to me other than ringing ears and tingling arms (from the acid) after it exploded.

I have found that it is the way you hold the camera when you take a picture.

I had the two 8D batts for house as well. PO cheaped out used start batts. The GP31 start batts were really tired, so I moved decent 8Ds to start tray. Then converted to 4@6v golf carts in series parallel. Other members shared pics I had found. I just needed a couple short jumpers to series each pair. I did have to trim the bent 1/2" angle in back of tray that bent inward. This was to clear my latching mechanism with rods that are inside of tray, your may may vary, looks like it does. It leaves about 2" gap I have some blocking. There I have stashed golf cart lifting strap and couple other thing that slip my mind. They are laid out like this.Click image for larger version

I would replace both batts and any/all cables that I could reach both ends from in the battery compartment Clean or replace the ends on any cables you can not replace. As previously posted, clean the tray and compartment, use battery terminal spray on all connections.

Your batteries are near end of life in my amateur opinion. I would not waste time and effort on them to only gain another 6-18 months use (and worry) before doing the above PM anyway.

Good thing you noticed before having an issue on the road.
