Battery Terminal Spray

Just cleaned up my 6-6V GC batteries for my house bank. Terminals were a little ugly on some of the batteries so decided I should use a terminal spray/grease to help eliminate further corrosion. I will use the mineral oil when they get low enough to get the proper level but for now want to use a spray or grease. What have you used for this purpose?

Do not know the brand but I bought a small can (~3 oz) at Walmart in their battery department and it's seemed to do a decent job keeping the battery terminals from corroding.

How much mineral oil to you put in each battery, I've read about this before and may consider trying.

We live in the salt-encrusted Northeast. My mechanic recommends using Fluid Film on battery terminals and many other metal parts. Apply as directed.

Its nice because it also applies an orange tracer so you can see that you have covered the entire terminal more easily but its a bit messy and requires a bit of clean up after spraying because its essentially a spray paint.

Here is mine.

Get it CLEAN!

Use the reamer type terminal/post tool as it removes metal and makes the angle same on both.

Use wire brush to clean everything else.

Soap and water to clean top of battery being careful to not get any inside.

Be sure to check wires at connectors to insure no intrusion.

Some like the felt washers and they seem to help.

Coat the posts with light coating of electrical grease and rub it into the connectors too trying to get it into where the wire is attached.

Place cables back on and tighten correctly then verify light coat of grease on all metal parts.

Maintenance is just a rinse of area when washing unit and visual look to check.

Back in the old days we used to just clean up the terminals then coat them with Vaseline. Just don't put it back in moms medicine cabinet with a bunch of grease and dirt in it or bad things happen.

The amount of mineral oil depends on the voltage of the battery, but as I understand it use 2 oz per cell on 12 volt batts and 4 oz per cell on 6 volt batts.

Trojan and other battery manufactures recommend attaching the cables before applying any coating.

I can't see having a non-conductive, like grease, between my connections.

Once the clean connection is made, a spray will coat any non conducting surfaces.

CRC sells cleaner and terminal protector sprays. You can get them at Auto Parts stores like Autozone. The spray turns collor (orange maybe?) when it contacts acid. Spray, brush, wipe, spray again till there is no more color change.

Then use the terminal protector spray, which leaves a reddish brown coating on the terminals.

NAPA sells really good Terminal cleaner that foams up. They sell the protective spray also. Baking Soda mixed with water still does a good job too of cleaning !

The grease is there before you tighten then as the connector is tightened (using the reamer the angles match and most pits gone) the grease will squeeze out and will remain only in places where the fit is not perfect or where an air gap would be.

Those spots are where the reaction starts to make the connection bad.

Have terminal protector that sprays out red stuff from a big can I have had on a shelf in my workshop for several years. Seems to do the job.
