We read another version of this story yesterday. They were boon docking on or by the beach, and then later on, after they were murdered, border patrol video cameras caught their truck and trailer entering over the Mexican border.

And why didn’t border patrol check driver licenses, might have seen something wrong with that picture. WI license plates & unknown driver’s license

Border patrol on the US side doesn't check much of anything for vehicles and drivers LEAVING the USA. That's for the Mexican border patrol to look at, and their whole system seems to be set up to let as many tourists into the country as they can without hassle. Which is understandable.
