Four for one.

I'd loan any non breathing thing I own to a friend. They are just things, easily replaced, friends are not.

A beater is something currently working, no replacement insurance, and if it died tomorrow would not be the end of the world. No additional major investment is planned or warranted.

You seem to already have a great plan. Take your buddy camping, have him do allllll the work, you hold his beer while he learns. I would add one thing. Then unexpectedly charge him for the trip. Then he'll have a more authentic experience.

We are so good at spending other people's money. Lol

Better yet, have him come over and do all the prep work before the trip.

In Az we call them "Ranch vehicles"! Not beaters..... After you wash them they look like they need to be washed again!!!! but it won't do any good. All my stuff is from the 90's except our new car, 2007 elantra with 180k on it. Makes a good toad. In kingman if the paint is falling off then they are considered "local's".... Other wise they are high brow "Californian's"...(0:
