Better to carry unmounted spare tire?
I have a storage compartment big enough to carry a spare tire, but should I carry it unmounted? Isn't a front wheel different from a dual wheel? Since one can't predict which tire might go flat does it make sense to just carry the unmounted tire? Can the roadside service guys remove the bad tire and mount the new spare where the flat occurred?
I'm planning to do this to avoid having to settle for whatever tire the repair service might have available.

Most dual rear and front rims are the same , unless you have alloy wheels .
If you do have an unmounted spare , any roadside assistance that you call ; and give your info to ; should be able to dispatch a unit to remove and install the tire from the rim and reinstall on the coach .
IF !!!! you ever need this done remember the lug nuts need to be re-torqued soon after the RV is moved , within 50 miles and again in 200.
My F/L chassis and many other chassis with 22.5" wheels , lug nut torque is 450 ftlbs.

The chances of getting a flat is slim, but if you have the room, it's a good idea to carry an unmounted tire. Then the roadside service can mount it and torque the wheel to the correct specs.

That's a great idea if you have a place to carry it! Most of us don't.

Had a friend loose his front tire (22.5 flat) They just had him use the jacks to lift the front off the ground changed the tire didn't even take the rim off.

Carrying an un mounted spare tire is a great idea if you have the room. Many times the roadside tire mech won't need to remove the wheel from the coach if its the front, or outside duel.
Some of us are not lucky enough to have the same size tire on front and rear.
That being the case, you either carry two, or decide on one size.

My unmounted spare is strapped up underneath the chassis rails.
Also carry a tyre plug kit because most flats are nails and screws so removing it and inserting a plug takes just a couple of minutes. Need a compressor or access your rigs air system to top off and away you go. Some will say you will die a horrible death if you do this but you can always get a tyre shop to fix it properly, or you can just drive it like that until the tyre wears out.

"Yep...it's better to carry an unmounted spare."
This was told to me by a commercial truck tire shop manager.
While getting new tires all around, I just posed the question about getting a new RV tire in case of an emergency. Explained as, because RV tires are less common than over the road truck tire types and might not be readily avaliable on weekends, holidays, or far from a city center.
And...according to Murphy's Law, by carrying a spare, an RV owner dramatically reduces the chances of a tire failure.
We picked to save the best of the 6 removed. Here's how we mounted ours underneath the rear overhang:

Wow, I've never heard of mounting a tire without removing the wheel! Thanks to all for the feedback.

I don't carry a spare, no place for it and even if there was it just ages out anyway so there is no cost savings. Possibly paying more for one roadside would not be more money than buying a spare at it rotting in my bay. I understand the mindset of being prepared but you can not plan for everything. Inspect tires, keep good date codes, check for proper pressures and tire loss goes way down.

I haven’t had to buy tires for the coach yet, but I know I’m not going to buy RV tires when I do, so I won’t need to worry about not find the matching tire if I ever need one on the road.

Better to have and not need, then to.........(ect.)
I carry an unmounted MH spare and a mounted tow dolly spare in the trunk of our Malibu when we travel. Not had a need for either these past 30,000 + miles since we started our Motor-homing.

Carrying an hour unmounted tire is a good idea, imho. You don't run the risk of getting an unmatched tire, a tire you really don't want, paying a high price, or trip delays waiting for a tire.
An ERS will not cover the actual tire/wheel swap.
