Bicycle Rack for Class A

I am looking for a bike rack for our motor home. I'm towing so I think that I should get a rack where the bikes hang on the arm of the rack rather than one where the wheels are on a support bracket.

What brand and model do you use? Any issues?

Thanks,
Gary

Just kind depends on what set up you want. I have a hitch splitter. Lower receiver has the tow bar, upper has a Kuat NV 2.0 with an add on bike carrier that holds four bikes by the wheels. It tilts down so I can access the engine without removing the bikes.

Got over 100,000 miles with no issues. The only racks I use.Click image for larger version

Do you tow? I'm concerned that if I have a setup like you have that the rack and bikes would keep me from sharp turns.

Kuat racks. Www.kuatracks.com I got about 20K worth of carbon under that cover. Won’t trust any other rack. Great quality and great CS.

Swagman rack

Have a SEC Cross Country 2 bike rack. Been in use almost 3years about 20,000 miles. Like it very much. Only comment is put a day on the cross bar that the center clamp comes down to avoid a "rub" in the bike paint. Most ladies frame bikes do not need a add on bar to hold the bike in place . Use a double recieve r rack in top.

We have a similar set up as Jake21 but use a swagman bike rack for the bikes with a cover. No problems.

funny... I always see "cheap bikes" on rigs on I95. $300,000 rig... $40 bikes.

Me too. But i get it. If you just cruise around the rv park on the bike every once in a while, a cheap bike will do. If you put 10-12K miles a year in the saddle and race, then that is a different world.

Why not place the bike rack on your TOAD. I added a hitch to my CRV and place my bikes there.

My toad is a truck and I need access to the bed to load and unload our Cricket.

Agreed. If you tow a Jeep, Thule makes a really nice one that bolts to the spare, has a lock for both the rack and they bicycles when they are attached, and folds up easily so you can leave on there when not in use and it doesn't impede your view..

Problems I see with hanging style racks. 1. I have not seen a hanging rack that does a good job of securing the bottom so there tends to be a lot of swinging movement - bad for bikes. 2. Carbon fiber bikes not designed for hanging with all weight on top tube. 3. Few hanging racks allow padlock security if you have expensive bikes. Most hanging racks I have seen provide no security for wheels making them easy picking. Just about all wheel support carriers do a good job of stabilizing top and bottom. I have MANY miles and years on a Swagman and a knockoff that costs about 1/3. Due to tail wag at rear of longer RV's there is a lot more stress on the hitch, bike rack and bikes than behind a car or pickup.
