Calgon works well in any of the tanks. 5 gallons of water, 1/2 gallon of Calgon and let it swish around in the tank on the way to the campground and then dump it.

Happy Camper always gets good reviews around here. Might want to try their Extreme Cleaner for tough stuff.

I viewed a UTUBE video, demonstrating that the bag of ice does not clean anything.

When I bought my RV the black tank was mostly full and I don't know how long it had gone without being dumped... and to make matters worse, I waited months because I was having serious medical issues I was dealing with.

After reading up, I added a tablespoon of baker's yeast and about 5 gallons of hot water... drove it around for a while... let it sit for a day, added another 5 gallons of hot water drove and dumped it. The dump station wouldn't let me rinse, but they let me go home fill more hot water and let me drain it again without an additional charge. It didn't come out clear, but all the solid waste was gone and it was opaque, so I have a good feeling that it cleaned out fairly well without being able rinse/repeat.

I'm still an RV noob so yeah, my info means exactly squat. Just wanted to post. lol

Sorry, that's an old rv tale that has no merit.

How often do you do this? A whole bottle of Dawn? Really?

This seems to be about the most popular....along with The Geo Method and just using plain water.

FWIW, black tank chemicals are, in my opinion, just a waste of $$. If you have an odor in the rv, you have a malfunctioning system. A seal, gasket, or vent is defective allowing the odor to escape.

Using proper black tank procedures....keeping valve closed, using lots of water, and waiting until tank is at least 2/3rd full prior to dumping...will keep the system happy.

Personally, I use water and a cup of liquid laundry soap whenever I travel.

So.... pick one.

Try 1/2 cup bleach , 1/2 cup cheapest liquid laundry soap, 1/2 cup cheapest liquid fabric softener. Add to tank and use as normal, fill tank at least 3/4 full before dumping. Anyway it works for me. It does both cleans sensors and eliminates odors. My 2 cents worth.

I use Happy Camper only when going to storage for 3 or 4 weeks or more. After every 3 or 4 dumps I add 1/2 cup blue Dawn dishwasher soap and then dump as soon as I arrive at my next overnight stay. No problems in almost 10 years of using this method.
