While in Santa Fe, NM, a couple of years ago I had a conversation with a fellow towing a 40' 5th wheel with a motorcycle trailer behind it. I'll guess 75' over all. He told me that reciprocity allows him to go any where and he'd been in CA several times. No mention of a permit. He was registered in SD. Makes me wonder if the CA over length permits are for CA registered vehicles and maybe commercial vehicles only.

I'll recommend the Mountain Directory as a way of staying safe on many roads in the west.

There is no such thing as reciprocity involving lengths, towing requirements, etc. Any time you tow through a state you have to meet that state's guidelines. Double towing is allowed in some states as long as the first towed trailer is a fifth wheel. Reciprocity only applies to driver's license requirements in your home state.

Reciprocity applies to drivers licenses and registration in most if not all states. It does not apply to the length or weight in any state. You must abide to each state's weight and length laws. On the bright side, most LEO in most states are lenient to RV's unless you are speeding or creating a hazard to other vehicles. Technically you are breaking the law in CA at 66' and up and could be ticketed if without a permit. The guy you were visiting with has been lucky. He might have to lose the trailer on his next trip.
