Carefree awning help

A friend with an American Allegiance has his awning out, and it has a broken drive gear. We are in the boonies. Is there a way to manually retract the awning, so he can get somewhere for repairs?

Need more info. What style of Carefree awning is it. Has he actually removed the cover and seen the broken drive gear? Can he hear the motor running? If it is an Eclipse I might have some suggestions.

Go to Carefree of Colorado - Recreational Vehicle Awnings and see if they have that particular awnings documentation. In the documentation of my Travl'r, they tell you what to do in an emergency.

Thanks for your suggestions, but none apply. This is an electric awning, with the struts on the side.

Mine is as well , although those instructions most likely will be different. Just thought I'd show you the Dometic solution.

You did not answer my questions. The Carefree Eclipes awning is an electric awning with struts on each side which rolls up into a metal cover. Just changed the motor in mine.Carefree Eclipse Patio Awning

I believe it is an Eclipse. Yes the motor runs. I removed the forward cover, and found the intermediate gear in pieces.

My problem though not the same had the same result. I had one of the units with only one flat on the drive shaft which wore down and let the awning extend on its own then not retract. Story here http://www.irv2.com/forums/f115/awni...er-169250.html

We had to manually retract it sitting on the side of the road at a terrible angle and with the wind blowing. What we did was use ropes in the arms to pull the arms down and closed then climbed a ladder and tied the arms in the shut position. Then two of us went up on the roof one on each end of the awning and rolled it up by hand. If the gear is gone this should also work for you. If not you can remove the two square drive screws that hold the front end cap to the tube and then roll up the awning on the tube. If you have to do this do not remove the end cap from the tube just hold the end cap on the tube and rotate the tube. Be very careful, if the arms are not tied securely in place the gas struts will deploy the awning violently and could knock you off a ladder. Once you have it wound back up you need to tie it securely in place for travel as the wind can get under it and unroll it. Good luck!!

Bdpreece, thanks for the information. We had to leave this morning. The couple with the awning problem were going to call a mobile rv tech for help. We hated to leave them there, but couldn't be helped. Thanks again for your help.
