CAT 3126B Injection Action Pressure Fault Codes

I'm posting this to see if anyone out there has experienced something similar; flash codes 15 and 39 discovered after engine de-rated with check engine light coming through Atlanta on I-20. Bus was running fine until traffic slow down when check engine light came on. Limped it home de-rated (40mph max, 40% max engine power) and got flash codes 15 and 39. It drove fine without issue the next day to local Atlanta CAT dealer and their diagnosis is it needs HEUI pump, injectors and oil rail flush--possible metal contamination. It's the 15 code that has me wondering as my understanding is that is an IAP sensor/harness that has an open, short or out of range reading, plus the fact it drove without issue the following day and the check engine light was out after I started it shortly after arriving home. Seems very gremlin-ish. The kit for the HEUI pump and injectors is $4K. I asked the service manager if they had commanded the ECM to various pressures to see if the pump can keep up and he said yes plus they performed individual cylinder tests. Engine has 85K miles and I'm surprised by their diagnosis. Work hasn't started yet and I'm wondering if I grab an IAP sensor and Injection Actuation Pressure Control Valve replace them myself and take a chance.

1. you will get more replies if you post this on the CAT forum

2. have seen the you tube video from Adept Ape about the new oil filter for the HEUI oil supply line? If you buy the pump be sure they installed the upgraded supply line filter to the new pump.

3. replacing those parts yourself is only $2-300 and cannot hurt

4. I agree that it seems odd that its crippled one day and fine the next

5. I'm driving a 2001 myself so I'm really interested in you outcome.

For JNSNWT: I'll let you know the outcome with details. I've seen all the Adept Ape YouTube videos and could do the work myself. First time in over 20 years anyone has worked on any of my engines. I've elected to have the local CAT center replace with their "kit"--pump, injectors and I've got to find out what else is included, hopefully the new supply line. Business trip coming in a few days with no time to work on the bus...

For gatorcq: I couldn't agree more with your diagnosis. It came down to a time and risk issue and had to go with the pump/injector "kit". If the thing de-rates after a sensor-only change on the next trip it becomes a much bigger problem.

I had an HEUI pump,6 injectors, seals, Iapc and sensor and oil and coolant change by a CAT shop in Longview, Wa. for $5K total, not counting sales tax.

Had the same derating losss of power problem in Washington State(?). The sensor was first thought the problem and cost about 1000$ to replace. Ran fine for about 100 miles then same thing. Then Heui pump replacement 3500$ which solved the problem. This was 3 years ago on C7 with 35000 miles.

The bus came home Thursday. Total damage was $6685. HEUI pump was $1071.86 (reman). Injectors (reman) were $366 each. IAP sensor was $153. CAT DEO ULS 15W40 oil is only $2.45/qt. LABOR $2646. Tough engine to work on. All connections at the pump were corroded. One valve cover bolt broke and had to be drilled out and heli-coiled. Beaver has Hurricane system hoses crossing and lying on top of valve cover. Workmanship and attention to detail seemed very good and well explained on invoice.

There was no mention of the oil cooler/oil cooler gasket as a contamination source but that was a non factor as I replaced it 5 years ago.

We'll see how it does going south on I-75 Monday.
