A gallon low when hot? What do you consider bad? Did you check it the morning you left?

He is running out to CAT to pick up a sensor to see if that fixes it.

Still looking for opinions..
Is the mechanic actually from a CAT dealership? Is he using the CAT ET scan tool?

I ask because you said the Silverleaf had a code "unknown error". That should have been picked up by the CAT ET scan tool. If there is no code in the engine ECM then what is the Silverleaf picking up?

Also, 55 psi is within the normal operating range for oil pressure. So if the sensor was stuck at 55 the ECM would not know it was stuck - so why did engine shut off?

And...
It was not a bad fuel pump, or regulator.

He is now thinking it is the ECM (again).
$1300 yesterday in labor and parts
$900 today in labor and parts
ZERO Progress to show for

New ECM = $2000 ($500 back for core)
**** is adding up quickly...

He is not from CAT.
From this company here: https://www.onsitetruckaz.com

Still have no idea why the engine shut off.
He thinks it is the ECU since there is no RPM movement on the dash when we crank the engine. (It cranks but doesn't start).

I'd let that guy go and find another mechanic. Preferably one that knows the ins and outs of that engine.

Before you fire him, ask to find out did he bleed the air out of the fuel system? If not, that should be included in the cost of replacing the fuel pump. Ask him how he knew the fuel pump was bad. Probably just a guess. Unless he verified it was bad, that is another reason to fire him.

You don't have budget to replace part after part until he finally comes across the broken part. That is a clear sign he doesn't know what the [Moderator Edit] the issue is because he lacks diagnosing skills.

He disconnected the line after the pump and had me turn the key.
He said it should be about 60 PSI, and the fuel was just barely spitting out.
Bad pump or regulator, so he replaced one at a time.

Nothing.

He is at Empire right now buying the ECM.
If this doesn't work, I am canning him.

Ask what the fuel pressure reading was after he replaced the pump and regulator (if he knows?). If the pressure is the same as before the new pump, the issue could be a clogged fuel line/whatever somewhere before the pump.

Man I feel for you, I hope he gets it figured out soon for ya. Had a similar experience and it was a Cummins dealer, $10,000.00 repair bill when all said and done.

Many Country Coaches have an "Emergency Stop" switch in the engine bay. On my 2000 CC it is located on the right hand side of the engine bay, it's yellow box with a 2 inch Red button and marked "Emergency Stop." If the switch is activated the engine will shut down and will not start. The switch needs to be "reset" before you can start the engine again.

I have also heard that sometimes the switch contacts get corroded need to be cleaned or replaced. Activating and resetting the multiple times may be enough to clean the contacts. The best contact cleaner I have found is Hosa D5S-6 CAIG DeoxIT and is available on Amazon

Another option would be to by-pass the switch to make sure it is not the problem. You should review the wiring diagram before you do this.

I'm not a diesel mechanic, but if there is such a thing as a Primary fuel filter, that could be clogged if the pressure is still low after the fuel pump and regulator were replaced.

I'm with diginomad, time to cut your loses with that mechanic and find someone who isn't just a parts changer. It sucks when you get a guy who just changes out parts until he gets lucky and finds the problem. I would want the parts that he replaced as well if you don't get any kind of credit for them.

Wow, your going to really pi**ed off soon.....my $$ is that ain't your problem.

With out any proper scan tool, code reader and a tech that knows how to read it, this is a crap shoot.

Sorry I can't provide any input on your issue, but without the CAT diagnostic codes, all I could do is make a wag.....you already got one of them on the payroll.

Really makes me sad, as "mechanic" (not technician) like this make the rest of us in the trade look bad.

Good luck.
