Celebrity Motorhomes - Max Lengths Changed?
Hi,
I've enjoyed taping the tv series"Celebrity Motor Homes" that feature a lot of over-the-top RV's for bands, performers and the like. Some are over-the-road coaches that have no slides but 10~12 band members bunking in them, others are more "on-set" with slide outs galore.
But I was really surprised how long some of the RV's features were...48', 50' even 52' long!
How do they not get cited? My understanding was the maximum length was limited to 45'. I would think 52' would stand out like a sore thumb (some of them even pull small trailers!).
If they're registered in certain states, do they get around that limit?

I don't know the direct answer to this question, but remember that a lot of the 18-wheeler trailers are 53' (they even have the 53' printed right on the side of the trailer). If a single trailer can be 53', I can't see there being a law against a single unit being 53'.

I'm guessing (stress on guess) that they are doing some sort of commercial vehicle registration in combo with a full-CDL pro driver. Doubt that many of those celebrities drive their own rigs.

Most limits are 65' combined for single tow.

I didn't know prevost made a 52 ft shell in either xl or h3 configuration. do you think it could be a little hype for the sake of the show? either way the show is entertaining!

I heard the same comments made on that TV show as the OP and I asked ya'll here:
http://www.irv2.com/forums/f20/longe...le-178908.html
I am now VERY sure these bus conversions are 52' long because at least 4 different band buses featured on that show were quoted as being that size - no other size - always 52'.
One band rep even said - "...it's the newest thing in Tour Buses..."
I am sure it's real and most probably a commercial thing (Comm. vehicle and driver license's required) not for public consumption.
The 45' single vehicle law is federal - but there's always exceptions to federal rules.
Safe travels

Most states limit single vehicle lengths to 45' and combinations to 65-75'. The good news is most states don't enforce them for RVs.

my rig is 52' I am 7' over length in Fl where I live max length is 45'. max total lenght with trailer is 65'. when I put the small trailer behind me I am 78' that makes me 13' over. the dot ticket will be around $1000, it is the risk I take every time I hit the road. I tried to get a overlength permit but it looked like I needed to make the whole thing commercial which opened a new bag of problems. health card, log book, aprotioned tags, Ifta and DOT #'s. I just take the chance.

Hello Everyone.
I'm new to posting but I've been lurking for over a year now. I can't tell you how much I've learned from all of you. I'm so glad a site like this exist because I would have made so many mistakes out there. I actually haven't registered because I don't own a coach yet but his thread though caused me to register and offer my two cents.
I've actually done a lot of research on this subject, I like big things, and this is what I've discovered. Terminology is key.
Motor Homes are limited in most states to 45 feet however MOTOR COACHES are limited to 50 feet. A motor coach is defined, in Florida for example, as being built on a self-propelled bus type chassis having no fewer than three load-bearing axles, and is primarily designed to provide temporary living quarters for recreational, camping, or travel use.
Anything longer than fifty feet requires an over length permit that is renewed annually.
I've been in contact with the owner of Power House Coaches and one of the first questions I ask was how do you get buy making coaches that are so large. He explained you can build almost anything you'd like you just need the permits, which apparently are very easy to get.
Anyway, hope that helps.
