I'd like to change the Dexron III fluid and filters in my MH3060 Allison transmission. I've heard there are a few tricks to it, but is doable(I've changed all of the other fluids and filters on my coach myself). I've searched, but can't find an installation procedure for doing this. Can anyone help? BTW, I'm not interested in switching to Transynd.

You will first need to get the filters for your trans. THen you will need to get about 4 gallons of fluid. On the trans you will find two round plates and a side drain plug. You will need to drain the fluid and remove the plates. This is where the filters are. After draining put in new filters and refill with fluid. You will not be able to get the fluid in the torque converter out wilthout a trans lube pump machine. I changed mine out last year with the trans fluid exhange machine and went to synthetic. It made a difference immediately. I'm glad I did. Oh by the way we did "clean" the trans at the same time. My old shop in Jackson, Ga. has the equipment to do it right. If you go to this link and download the Fluid/Filter Recommendation for the 3000 Series (its at the top of the listing) on Page 8 of this publication is a drawing that shows the locations of the drain plug, filters, bolts, torque values, and the filter Assemblies.

Allison Transmission

With this you should be able to do the job. When you refill the tranny, just fill until it is on the low mark of the tranny and then run the engine until it warms up and recheck. The tech had me put the parking brake on, tranny in "D" and set the high idle to 1500 rpm's to warm the tranny fluid. Then he made sure the fluid level was only 1/3 of the way up between the "Cold" and "Hot" marks with the tranny in "N" and engine idling.

Just had ours done a couple weeks ago at Western Branch Diesel and refilled with TranSyd, it took 19 quarts but the tech removed some "port" plugs and was able to get more fluid out. The cost was appox $405.00

It took the tech almost two hours, so it is a long process.

Thanks Mike and Ron. That helps a lot. The filters are on their way(Inland Truck Parts, Irving, TX); about $50 including shipping. In the file on the Allison website(link in Ron's post) showing the diagram of the 3000 series transmission the main drain plug looks like it's on the bottom of the case(same surface as the filter covers). Looks like I'll be able to do the whole job for about $100.
