Check engine light

We have a Fleetwood Expedition with a Freightliner chassis. Very recently we got a check engine signal in the dash and of course it won't go away. Nothing new happened it just appeared out of nowhere. All typical maintenance items checked and everything seems normal. The book advises I should look for low oil pressure or high coolant temperature but neither of those are an issue. Before we spend big bucks on a dealer any suggestions?

Buy or borrow an OBD2 reader for under $50 and find the error code. While you are at it you can use it to reset the check engine light.

Just an update. Went to Freightliner and they looked and found a part connected to the DEF system that was covered under that warranty (I.e., not fleetwood). We made the deadline just short of 3 months. Needless to say... Whew. Thanks for the advice though. They knew that I knew what I was talking about regarding diagnostic tests, or at least I faked it pretty well
