Chrome Mirrors

Is it possible to remove the mirrors bases to sandblast them to prepare for black paint or powder coating? My mirrors are fine, but the bases are corroded and peeling.

I'm not familiar with powder coating prep , I'm sure the company would want to handle it or tell you what to expect .But you can paint over chrome if completely sanded and acid etch primer. If its flaking of all over it's a tough venture. We did sand blast chrome rims not trying to remove it all. Then acid etch primer followed by Corlar epoxy primer followed by Imron paint. Not they we couldn't make beautiful, but did on the cheap so customers were asked/agreed to not expect a show car perfection on these or they were better off buying new. All looked fine by the 3ft. rule most were Jeeps or trucks not cherry sport cars.
It was discussed here having a certain company doing a great job re-chroming them.

Yes, you remove the bolt from the bottom of the base, may have to put a longer bolt in so you can hit it to loosen the taper fit. Getting to the connections for the wires will be fun...second person to hold the mirrors as you remove the base. Some have used bed liner paint on the bases.

I was able to buy the newer plastic/chrome covers that go over the bases. You may want to replace the screws with bolts if you can reach the back side.
