I asked my insurance (National General) this very question last fall since the storage facility where my coach resides over the winter has to be moved once in a while and only they can drive the coach into and out of the building. I was told as long as I gave them permission I was covered, same as a car.

I'd be interested in knowing if all insurance companies agree with that. On this very site I believe I have read where only the insureds on the policy can drive it. It really makes no sense since when you take it somewhere for service or repair it seems quite likely that they will need to drive it, even if only in and out of a garage.

Side note. This also applies at auto repair facilities. A oil change place backed my truck into another vehicle. No damage to mine, destroyed the fake brush guard on the other guys truck. National Oil Change refused to cover the damage and I was the one sued.

That's exactly what National General stated as an example of me (policy holder) giving permission. What I didn't ask was what would happen if this were on the highway and driven a long distance.

The bottom line is whatever anyone tells you, whether it is on this forum, or your insurance broker, or the insurance company itself, it means nothing. The only thing that matters is what is written in the actual insurance policy. If you need a definitive answer, pull out your policy and read it. Or, you can pull it out, call your insurance company, ask them the question, then ask them to point out to you exactly where in the policy it is stated . . . . Chances are they don't know and will have to research it. They just answer what the person in the cubicle next to them told them. Not saying it's wrong, but I've had several instances where the insurance representative over the phone told me that something was NOT covered, and I pointed out in the policy that it WAS covered.

Hey Scott, now that is good counsel right there!!!
Ask the question, get the answer and then "and where will I find the exact language on my policy"?
That's such a terrific idea! Do not be at all surprised in another 5 or 6 posts I repurpose it as my own idea!

If any is ever in this situation know this, the shop is responsible for the actions of it's employees and is supposed to have insurance for these situations, barring that the owner of the damaged vehicle can use their uninsured motorist to cover the damages and let them go after the shop and/or the operator for their money, that have lawyers for just such things. Jimbo I know it's too late to help you but maybe this will help someone else

As we know, no two consumers are the same. so on the topic of Insurance, smart consumers will educate themselves on what information is being retained on them. Its our right to know and all you have to do is request a report from the agencies that collect and maintain such data (similar to a credit report).
Armed with such information will aid consumers in knowing (and in some cases correcting) the information which is instrumental on determining coverage (rates) available.
Stay in the know, Get a CLUE!

Interesting that my attorney and USAA disagreed with you. Basically yes the shop is responsible and has insurance but I was also a responsible party. Separate but equal is the phrase.
The damaged party sued me after the oil change shop and their insurance did not offer a satisfactory settlement.

Nowadays it seems it's all internet, emails and texting. I currently have USAA for my car and couldn't be happier. But when I call in it's always a different person who knows me only by what's on the screen in front of them. Sure that produces a lot of screaming and hanging up but that's only to be expected!
Putting aside the actual person in an office, is the carrier from the broker any different than who I'd talk to at Geico or USAA?

As a property and casualty insurance agent for over 40 years all of you make good points. Find someone that you can talk too, in person, and trust. A good insurance agency earns their keep when you have a claim not only when they help you find the right overages for you. Don't skimp any more on your insurance than you would on parts and repairs on your coach.
Rates also vary according to garaging location, credit, driving record and other business you have with the company. One of the newer gimmicks used by companies is a new customer, policy discount that goes away in a year or two. Another thing that companies do is change rates as they decide and try markets, can and are they making money. Several companies are starting to limit the length now. It seems that 35' is fast becoming the mark.
A company I would suggest you locate an agent for is Nationwide (Allied). They are getting more and more competitive in RV, Boat, MC (including golf carts) coverage. The most important thing is someone you can trust and talk too.

Here's another piece of advice. You can contact the three major Credit rating companies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion and request that they not release your credit information to ANYONE without written authorization from you. They have to do it.
When we applied to refinance our home, the bank called back and said they couldn't get the credit check as they needed a written signed release in order to do the credit check. We provided it, and it went through that time.
I called Geico a few years ago, to get a quote on insurance. They said they needed my SSN. I told them that they didn't have authorization to check my credit for an insurance quote. They assured me that wasn't what it was for, and that they didn't run a credit check . . . .I gave it them. Got a call from another rep at Geico the next day who said that they couldn't give me a quote because when they requested the credit check it was blocked . . . . . .
Moral of the Story: What they SAY and what they actually DO can be very different things!
Oh, and as a side note, if you place the block, you will stop getting all the "pre-approved" credit card solicitations in the mail! That alone probably cut down our junque mail volume by at least 10%!
