Coach Step problems after new shoulder bolt

The shoulder bolt broke on my triple Coach Steps. I removed the steps and the broken bolt and replaced the shoulder bolt
with a new one. Did not know how to index the fan gear to the motor teeth, so
I extended the steps and put the gear near the end of the gear travel. Installed the steps and opened the door, the steps went out and inch or so, and locked up.
I removed the gear and moved it 5 or 6
teeth and then it went in and out fully, but was noisy. I noticed the heim jointed ends were both very loose, so I tightened them. When the steps are closed they seem to be bound up and under a lot of pressure, so i loosed the fan gear again and it seemed to want to rotate the fan gear another 5 or 6 teeth. Sorry for the long story.

Here are my questions.

1) How do you adjust linkage? I think it is too long. I found lots of info on the Kwikee, but nothing with fan gear and linkage.

2) Do I disconnect the Heim joint at the steps, extend the steps all the way out, Then adjust the link length until it fits in the mounting hole again?

Thanks,
Russ

Did you make any changes to the Heim joints during your disassembly? If not I personally would leave that be unless it wasn't working correctly before.

I have a 2005 Kountry Star with the same stairs and had to replace one of the bolts as well. I would remove the motor, push the stairs all the way out so the main gear is firmly against the stop (and the Heim joint linkage should also be against the shaft of the main gear) then re-install the motor. You can probably use a small jack to hold them in that position. Note that I found you need to loosen the main gear a turn or two of the step bolt to make it easier to line up the motor bolts. Once it's back together, the motor should self limit on travel due to the stops in the system and the current draw once they are contacted.

Below is a photo of mine in the open position.

The Heim joint on mine was VERY loose and made it act like it was much longer. When I tightened it, the steps didnt work right. I disconnected the joint and ran the gear out by opening the door, then Readjusted the length about 3/8" shorter and reinstalled with the steps extended. Now they work great. Thanks for the help.
