I also understand from reading elsewhere that the retention bracket if the recall will cause the step to not fully retract, rather to stuck out a bit, correct?

That is correct-- the bracket that is part of the kit hangs down below the motor/gear assembly and has a bump stop. When the step comes in , with the new bracket in place, it hits the bump stop and the steps do not retract as much as before the installation of the bracket. On my coach, they stuck out an inch or more-- I didn't like the looks, so I removed the bracket.

On mine the step end was the one that broke( left hand thread). Because the helm bracket is the same on both ends, whoever installed it originally could have installed it with the left hand thread at the motor just as easily as the step. I had to drop the motor and motor bracket to get the complete helm joint bracket out.

Like many things, if I had know how it worked when I started I could have changed out just the step end without having to remove the whole bracket and motor assembly.

If you want to be sure you could order both the of the ends. Another thought, you can take the part in the picture and see if you can screw it on a standard 3/8 bolt. If you can, you have the right had version, if not, then the left hand is what you need.

I was able to find the right hand version at a couple of auto parts stores and one hardware store but no one had the left hand version.

Good luck.

Keep me posted

I had to order from Grainger they had right hand and left hand heim joints.
My steps have failed 3 times, each time a different part.
Forest River has not been able to get my steps replaced , so I keep fixing them
